ethanol

ethanol
/ˈɛθənɒl/ (say 'ethuhnol), /ˈiθənɒl/ (say 'eethuhnol)

noun
ethyl alcohol produced from crops and used as a biofuel.
{ethan(e) + -ol1}
Ethanol is the alcoholic component of beer, wine, etc., and the fluid used in some thermometers and in antifreeze. It is increasingly being used as a biofuel. Since ancient times ethanol has been made by fermenting sugars. It is manufactured, for example, from starchy crops such as potatoes, corn, sugar cane and grains, and from the waste from such crops. As with other biofuels, it is therefore a renewable energy source and one which does not increase atmospheric carbon dioxide as fossil fuels do (see biofuel). However, some studies comparing the benefits and environmental impacts of ethanol have concluded that the carbon footprint calculated from growing, harvesting and converting biomass to ethanol exceeds the value in developing this alternative energy on a large scale.
